چکیده

The polyphenolic distribution of Vitis vinifera seeds (GSE), Citrus spp. fruits (CE) and Olea europaea L. leaves (OL) extracts were characterized and quantified by HPLC methods. Radioprotective effects of these extracts and the reference flavonoids diosmin and rutin, widely used as pharmaceuticals, were determined by using the micronucleus test for anticlastogenic activity, evaluating the reduction of the frequency of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MnPCEs) in bone marrow of mouse exposed to X-rays. The most effective compounds were, in order: GSE > CE > rutin > dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) > OL > diosmin. These results show that the free radicals scavenging capacity, mainly vs hydroxyl radical, and consequently, the anticlastogenic activity of these polyphenolic compounds are based, structurally, on the presence of specific functional groups in their structures, mainly the B-ring catechol, the 3-hydroxyl group and the 2,3-double bond conjugated with 4-oxo function and, in addition, by the stability of the aroxyl radical generated in the processes.

Antioxidant capacity and radioprotective properties of the flavonoids galangin and kaempferide isolated from Alpinia galanga L. (Zingiberaceae) against radiation induced cellular DNA damage

Background: Alpinia galanga L. belonging to the family Zingiberaceae is widely grown in the state of Kerala, India. They are effective antioxidant and free radical scavenger under both in vitro and in vivo condition. The efficacy of the isolated flavonoids in conferring protection from radiation induced damages to genomic DNA was studied. Materials and Methods: The bioflavonoids, galangin and k...

In vitro radioprotective effects of histamine H2 receptor antagonist against gamma-rays induced chromosomal aberrations in human lymphocytes.

Background: Radioprotective capability of histamine H2 receptor antagonists have been shown in several in vivo studies mainly using animal models. However, to verify the effectiveness of these agents in clinical applications, studies should be performed on human cells. In the present study radioprotective properties of these agents was examined in vitro on human lymphocytes using metaphase anal...

Invesitgating the Radioprotective Effect of Brewed Rosa damascene in Comparison with Vitamin E on X-ray Induced Chromosomal Aberrations in Human Peripheral Blood Lymphocytes Using Micronucleus Assay in Binucleated Cells

Aims: More people, for occupational and therapeutic purposes, is exposed to its harmful effects including chromosomal abnormalities every day. Radioprotective agents are able to reduce these kinds of damages through mechanisms such as free radical scavenging, donating hydrogen to damaged molecules and increasing activity of antioxidant enzymes. Medicinal plants which have been traditionally use...

Radioprotective effects of selenium and vitamin-E against 6MV X-rays in human blood lymphocytes by micronucleus assay

Background: Critical macromolecules of cells such as DNA are in exposure to damage of free radicals that induced from the interaction of ionizing radiation with biological systems. Selenium and vitamin-E are natural compounds that have been shown to be a direct free radical scavenger. The aim of this study was to investigate the radioprotective effect of selenium and vitamin-E separately and sy...

Protective effects of famotidine and vitamin C against radiation induced cellular damage in mouse spermatogenesis process

Background: Radioprotective effect of famotidine was previously shown on radiation induced micronuclei and chromosomal aberrations in human peripheral lymphocytes and mouse bone marrow cells however, its radioprotective property has never been studied in mouse spermatogenesis. It was also shown that vitamin C as an antioxidant also exert its radioprotective effect on many biological s...
